Voice Cloning ("Family Emergency")

A cloned voice of a relative or boss, calling in distress — and sounding completely convincing.

See All Red Flags

Voice cloning tools can now recreate a convincing imitation of someone's voice from just a few seconds of audio — a voicemail greeting, a social media video, a public talk. Scammers use this to call pretending to be a family member or a boss, usually in apparent distress, asking urgently for money, gift cards, or a wire transfer, often insisting the person not tell anyone else first.

What makes this scam effective isn't the voice alone — it's the combination of a familiar voice with manufactured urgency and secrecy. People are conditioned to trust what sounds like a loved one in distress, and the request to act fast and stay quiet is specifically designed to short-circuit the normal instinct to double-check.

The single most reliable defense has nothing to do with spotting a fake voice: it's hanging up and calling that person back directly, on a number you already have — not one given to you on the call — before taking any action involving money.
